Meetup | Cochineal: History + Practice with SDA AiR, Meli Bandera
Description
This three-week session explores cochineal as both material and cultural symbol, tracing its histories of trade, labor, and identity.
The first session centers on a discussion of Cochineal Red: The Art History of a Color by Elena Phipps and From Red to Mexican Pink (Artes de México, No. 111, 2013), grounding the group in the color's historical and conceptual significance.
The second and third sessions will be shaped by participants’ interests, creating space for shared dialogue, reflection, and informal skill-sharing. Drawing from their own practice, Bandera will share how cochineal informs their material and conceptual work, while participants are invited to reflect on their own relationships to the color, including regional knowledge, harvesting practices, or conceptual approaches.
Dates: Thursdays, April 23, 20, and May 7 from 7PM - 8:15PM EDT (convert timezone)
